Programmable Safety PLCs and Accessories Back to top				Which Safety PLC do I need? Which Safety PLC do I need? Close Which PLC is right for your application, depends a lot on your application. Here are some handy things to know about our offering, to help you better tailor your selection to your needs. It's not all about IO count. The Pluto B46, B20 and S20 all have different IO counts. But remember that multiple ABB Machine Safety devices can be wired back to one input, and still carry a PLe / CAT 4 safety rating. For example, four e-stop buttons don't necessarily have to populate four inputs, because all e-stop buttons should produce the same stop condition. Sometimes you need scalability, sometimes you don't. Pluto Safety PLCs can be optionally equipped with the Jokab Safety Bus system; the Jokab Safety Bus system is a twisted pair-wired bus system that connects a Pluto to another Pluto in an 'all-supervisory' manner. Over this Safety Bus, one PLC can control the IO of another PLC, and vice versa. Though the Pluto B46 comes equipped with a massive amount of IO for safety applications, there could come a time where you exceed the IO count; that's when it's good to have the Safety Bus on a pluto PLC. The amount of safety outputs you have, really depends on the stop conditions you have. The Pluto Safety PLCs carry either 4 or 6 safety-rated outputs; each output is a dual-contact, independent output. You don't need two outputs to drive a set of contactors, for example, you need only one output. a single output could conceivably drive five sets of contactors, but because the devices controlled by the contactors all have to be disabled at the same time, that's really just one stop condition group, and needs just the one output. Most applications for safety can be handled by 4 or 6 unique safety outputs that drive dual sets of mirrored contactors when higher power is being controlled. What is the DYNLink Loop / Vital Pulse signal? What is the DYNLink Loop / Vital Pulse signal? Close What is DYNLink loop? DYNlink, which is also sometimes called the Vital Pulse, is a means to wire up to 30 devices, in series, and achieve PLe / CAT 4 machine safety. The Vital Controller uses this technology exclusively and the Pluto Safety PLC uses this as well as provides for normal safety inputs. The purpose of the DYNLink technology is to provide a higher level of safety than traditional two-channel safety devices while simultaneously reducing wiring. How does it work? DYNlink-equipped control devices such as the Vital and Pluto both transmit a signal to a group of devices wired in series. The signal, when leaving the control device, has a *positive wave inversion. When the signal arrives on the R (receive) pin of a device, the signal either terminates at this device (if the device is considered 'open'--as in when a man door is open to a machine cell), or is inverted and passed along to the next device. When the first sensor is 'closed', the signal departs on the T (transmit) pin and has a negative inversion.* From this first device, it moves to the second device's R pin, and either terminates at an open device, or the wave signal is again inverted and passed to the next device in series. When wiring these devices into a controller, by the addition of a small jumper, you can configure the control device to either expect a positive or a negative inversion. In the event of a single device failure or fault, the inversion arriving back at the control device will be incorrect, and that will be seen by the controller as a fault in the safety system, and will not allow a restart of the safety contacts. What are the benefits of the DYNLink loop / Vital Pulse? A reduction in wiring -- you have the potential of reducing the wiring of your safety control system by HALF, which saves in time and labor. an increase in safety level -- wiring safety switches in series usually reduces your safety performance level to something dramatically less than PLe / CAT 4. Using ABB products that employ the DYNLink technology will help you achieve the PLe level that designers really want to design their machinery to. Does the DYNLink technology require special sensors? DYNLink technology requires safety-rated devices from ABB that can invert an incoming wave inversion. On ABB Machine Safety devices, any device that has a Tina Adapter will do this inversion. Eden sensors, Inca e-stops and Smile estops all have optional Tina wiring configurations. Additionally, there are several Tina devices that can take traditional, two-channel safety switches and convert them to Tina-adapted sensors. The Orion series of light curtains can use a special Tina connector on the end of the transmitter to put the light curtain into the series of devices on the DYNLink loop. What if I need more or higher-current safety output contacts? Using Contactors or Expansion Relays Close Some safety controls schemes require the opening of many contacts as a result of a single stop condition. Robot cells that use more than one robot, or a machine that uses several motor drives, are examples of this. Alternatively, some machines also require a higher current rating than a standard safety relay or safety output can withstand. That's when you use either a safety rated contactor or expansion relay. Expansion Relays Expansion relays such as the sentry BSR23 provide additional contacts for the switching of control-rated (not power-rated) inputs. Many motor drives and other newer technology devices that generate potentially dangerous motion, use their own safety-rated inputs to disable motors and other dangers, and as such, need to be governed by a safety-rated control device, but don't necessarily require a large amount of current. Expansion relays are a good choice to provide this lower current safety switching, because they're narrower and save DIN rail space, and are relatively easy to wire. Additionally, because an expansion relay is technically a pair of mirrored/force-guided relays, you only need to employ one device to expand safety outputs, not two. Contactors / Safety Contactors Contactors and Safety Contactors will work similarly to expansion relays, but will switch much higher currents than what a safety relay or expansion relay can. Contactors and Safety Contactors are normally used to switch three phase power to potentially dangerous motion devices such as motors and servos. While contactors/safety contactors are force-guided, safety standards still require the use of two of these devices in series to protect against an unsafe condition resulting from the welding of one contact on a single contactor. Safety Contactors differ from standard Contactors in that they use a permanently-fixed auxiliary contact block to hide the contactor actuators, and prevent accidental contact closure in a maintenance event.

Safety Relays, Vital Controllers and Contactors Back to top		Looking for the RT9 or E1T relays? Looking for E1T or RT9 Safety Relays? Close If you're looking for legacy safety relays like the RT9 or the E1T, we still stock them, but ABB is promoting the Sentry line of safety relays as a better and more economical alternative. As such, we expect that the Sentry line will overtake and replace the RT9 and E1T series. Here's what to look for in the Sentry line, if you are using the legacy relays: RT9 safety relay is replacedwith the SSR10 Sentry Safety relay. The RT9 safety relay from ABB, initially from Jokab Safety, was the workhorse of safety relays, and was the number 1 most popular safety relay on the market. It's a 24vdc safety relay that uses standard two-channel inputs and provides for 2 normally-open safety-rated contacts. The Sentry SSR10 provides for four total contacts -- 3NO and 1NC -- for more flexiblity and greater design convenience. If you used the RT9 in the past, we recommend you use the Sentry SSR10 going forward. E1T expansion relay is replaced with the BSR23 expansion relay. Expansion relays are often used when multiple devices must be disabled as part of a single stop condition -- as in the case with multiple conveyor drives that all have to stop in response to a single safety event like an e-stop being pressed. Expansion relays are an inexpensive way to expand the number of contacts that are available from a safety control device such as a safety PLC or a safety relay. The legacy expansion relay, the E1T, provided for 4NO safety rated contacts to expand the contact capabilities of a single safety relay or safety PLC output. The Sentry BSR23 expansion relay provides for 4NO and 1NC contact. Additionally, there are also delayed relays available as well on this platform. Vital or Safety Relay? What's the Difference? Vital or Safety Relay? What's the Difference? Close The differences between a Vital Controller that uses the DYNLink loop technology, and a traditional safety relay, are numerous. Both devices are designed to monitor safety devices such as e-stops, light curtains, door sensors and so forth. Both devices are designed to provide a single safety stop condition in the form of dual, monitored safety rated relay contacts. To read more about how the Vital Controller works, you can check out ABB's Vital Product Description. Ease of Wiring. Safety relays provide two circuits, or channels, that must be switched simultaneously in order to change the state of a safety relay. If the safety relay detects a change in state of just one channel, it regards this as a fault, and will open the safety contacts. This means that every field device will have usually four wiring points at a minimum, and up to six wiring points to pass along an informational output to the control PLC. The DYNLink loop technology does not use this dual-channel concept; it relies instead on a single-channel, pulsed signal to all the field devices. Since most all devices that use the DYNLink technology are connectorized, you remove a significant amount of wiring time. A traditional safety relay monitoring four e-stop buttons will have, at minimum, 30, and usually more, wiring connections to contend with. A vital controller with four Smile 11EA Tina e-stop buttons will have less than half of the same control, and achieve the same level of safety. When considering the same circuit with door switches, the wiring savings is still the same, but the safety level of the circuit increases from PLc or PLd to PLe/cat4. Better Device Diagnostics Devices on the DYNLink loop use an LED indicator light to provide it's status. In situations where a man door is open, knowing which door is open with a visual check can be convenient. Without having to land any extra wires, all DYNLink loop field devices use an LED that can change state to three different states: Green: Device is receiving and passing along the DYNLink signal to the next device downstream. Red: Device is receiving the DYNLink signal, but not passing along the signal--this door or switch is open. Red/Green flashing: The device is not receiving the DYNLink signal, a device upstream is open. In these situations, an operator only has to visually instead the LED of each door sensor to determine which door sensor (or sensors) are open. Higher Safety Levels with fewer components Perhaps the best thing about the Vital controller and DYNLink technology is that it provides for a PLe / CAT4 level of safety for machinery when using one door switch per door, in series, to one device. In the same situation with a traditional safety relay and mechanical door switches, wiring door switches in series only provides for a category 1 level of safety, since at any time, a single mechanical key can break off in a door sensor and render a condition unsafe. Safety standards mandate that in order to achieve a PLe / CAT 4 level of machine safety with safety relays and mechanical safety door switches, TWO switches per door must be used, and one safety relay PER DOOR must be used.\ Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, safety relays can mask wiring faults in channels; in the event a single channel shorts in a chain of devices, cycling power or opening a different door switch in series could mask a potentially lethal fault on the safety system. In the event of a fault on the Vital Controller, the controller simply will not allow for a restart, forcing operators to find and remedy the fault before it becomes dangerous. What if I need more or higher-current safety output contacts? Using Contactors or Expansion Relays Close Some safety controls schemes require the opening of many contacts as a result of a single stop condition. Safety Switches and E-Stops Back to top		Adam Non-Contact Sensors Adam Non-Contact Sensors Close The Adam non-contact series of sensors are a non-contact, non-magnetic means of sensing door closures and other safety events on your machine. Non-Contact: The Adam sensor is used in conjunction with an Eva actuator to provide a safety rated detection of door openings/closings, but the sensor can also be used to detect a variety of other safety-rated events on your machine. Because it's non-contact, you can mount this sensor to perform a variety of sensing applications, and not worry about colliding mechanical parts together that could get out of misalignment. The Adam series of sensors provide an ample amount of misalignment tolerance, without allowing hand or finger penetration into an unsafe condition in a machine. Non-Magnetic The Adam sensor does not use magnetic poles or any magnetism whatsoever to sense actuator presence, so you can safety use this sensor in any situation where metal dust and shavings could otherwise create a 'furry jacket' of metal shavings against a magnetized actuator. General Code and Unique Code ISO safety standards require ABB to provide either a general-code or a unique code actuator for the Adam sensor. The General code is the most popular, but a unique code actuator can be used in situations where maintenance personnel want extra safety in the matching of a specific actuator to door sensor. Power to Lock vs Power to Unlock? Power to Lock vs Power to Unlock? Close When using door locks as part of your overall safety system, you have to consider what you're trying to safeguard, before you can determine whether to use one or the other. Note: All users of Power to Lock and Power to Unlock devices should perform a risk assessment prior to applying. Power to Lock: Power to lock devices require a voltage signal to apply the door lock. In the case of the Magne devices, 24vdc is applied to the lock to hold the lock closed. Upon loss of the lock signal, the lock no longer holds the door to the door frame, and can be opened by personnel to enter. Locks like this are designed more to prevent interruption of sensitive operations or processes. Robots are a great example of a device that CAN stop immediately, but SHOULDN'T if it's avoidable. Stopping a robot unexpectly will trigger the robot to stop very quickly and safely if the safety sensor on the door is opened, regardless of the lock status. Power to Unlock: Power to Unlock devices work differently than Power to Lock, insofar as they require a voltage to UNLOCK the door. In it's default state, a Power to Unlock switch must have a voltage applied to it so it will release the hasp and allow for the door to open. Locks like this are often used in situations where either inertia or some other situation prevents the inside of a machine cell to be made safe quickly; in these cases, a deceleration of motion may have to occur over several seconds, during which time, the machine operations behind the guarding are still unsafe.

Safety Light Curtains Back to top				Light Curtain Terms to Know Light Curtain Terms to Know Close Note: users of light curtains should always conduct a risk analysis prior to applying any safety controls products. Understanding the technology behind light curtains is an important step in properly applying them to your safety controls system. Light Curtain Resolution When it comes to Light Curtain resolution, what's really important to understand is what you want to protect in your application. Depending on your risk assessment, you may have to protect against finger-width entry of a person, or hand-width entry of a person. Finger resolution provides more beams for a given protective distance, which will trigger the light curtain sooner, but the added beams equates to added cost. Hand resolution of 30mm means that the light curtain won't be tripped until something larger than 30mm blocks a beam. Fewer beams for a given protective distance means a little lower cost. Protective Distance Protective distance simply means the height of the area covered by the beams on the light curtain. The light curtain's overall length will be a little longer than it's protective distance, so if you purchase, for example, a 900mm protective distance light curtain, your light curtain will protect a 900mm-tall opening in your machine, but the light curtains themselves will be a little longer to accomodate the electronics and connector of the curtain.
